10 Best Living Songwriters
Paste Magazine recently published their list of 100 Best Living Songwriters. I agree with their No. 1 pick but am appalled to find Merle Haggard way down in the 60s behind Sting (!) and James Brown conspicuously absent from the Top 50!!!
Therefore, I hereby submit my own list of 10 Best Living Songwriters.
1. Bob Dylan
"Like a Rolling Stone," "Idiot Wind," "Jokerman," the guy is a lyrical genius also capable of composing beautiful melodies like "Lay Lady Lay" and "Just Like a Woman." Plus, he's still going strong with his new record "Modern Times" already creating a buzz prior to its Aug. 28 release.
2. Randy Newman
The foremost soundtrack composer in Hollywood ("The Natural," "Ragtime"), Newman is also pop music's greatest satirist ("Short People"), and a balladeer who can reduce grown men to tears ("Louisiana 1927").
3. James Brown
Take James Brown out of the equation and you can kiss funk, disco and Prince goodbye.
4. Chuck Berry
Take Chuck Berry out of the equation and you can kiss The Beatles and The Rolling Stones goodbye. Keith Richards stole Berry's guitar riffs and John Lennon once said another name for rock 'n' roll should simply be Chuck Berry.
5. Leonard Cohen
Pop music's only true poet, Leonard Cohen's lyrics actually look as good on paper as they sound on record — just check out the biblical imagery Cohen uses in his sexy masterpiece "Hallelujah."
6. Bruce Springsteen
Whether articulating angst-ridden father
and son relationships ("Independence Day," "Growin' Up"), the perils of
Vietnam vets ("Born in the U.S.A."), the grief of a nation post 9-11
("The Rising") or desperate teenage love ("Thunder Road"); the first
son of New Jersey speaks for Americans from sea to shining sea.
7. Joni Mitchell
The confessional lyrics laced with jazzy melodies, her album "Blue" might just be the greatest singer/songwriter effort of the 1970s.
8. Lou Reed
The ultimate New York City man, Lou Reed thrust transvestites, heroin addicts and various other extreme losers into a world previously populated only by fast cars, high school sweethearts and cartoon bullies.
9. Mick Jagger/Keith Richards
Whether mocking their own Satanist reputation in "Sympathy for the Devil," or pining for a lost lover in "Sway," or getting a party started with "Jumping Jack Flash," the Glimmer Twins hit the mark like no other living songwriting duo in rock 'n' roll.
10. Willie Nelson
The author of "Crazy," "Funny How Time Slips Away," and "Hello walls,"
Willie expresses "bitter" better than any scorned man alive.
Honorable mention: Brian Wilson, Lucinda Williams, Merle Haggard, John Prine, Tom Waits, Neil Young.

Montown songwriters? Prince? Elton John? Andrew Lloyd Weber? Mahler?(joke) Criteria are hard to prioritize.

That's about the most convincing top ten songwriter list I've ever seen on the internet.
But what about Daniel Johnston?

You're appalled by Merle Haggard's and James Brown's placement on the original list and yet John Lennon didn't even make the top 100? Yeah ok, I guess that guy never wrote any worthwhile songs!

Paul Westerberg, one of the most clever and wittiest songwriters around.

Steve, as much as I like John Lennon, last time I checked, he wasn't living.

I think you and I agree pretty well on the choices...BUT...when did Van Morrison die? You really think he does not belong on this list? He belongs.

I have a soft spot for Loretta Lynn's lyrics. ( and alliterations)

Randy Newman??? Randy Newman??? You gotta be kidding me. Randy Newman is a better songwriter than Lou Reed? Elvis Costello? Joni Mitchell? Jagger/Richards? McCartney? Van Morrison? Guy Clark? Gimme a break! Randy Freakin Newman????????? C'mon!

Stephen Sondhiem, please. Why are all these lists always just rock stars?

No Richard Thompson, Guy Clark or Steve Earle?
Sorry this list is a mainstream joke.

Anybody dissing Randy Newman hasn't listened to any of his albums. Go pick up 12 Songs and Sail Away, for starters. Devastating stuff.

Thanks for sticking up for Randy Newman, Melquiades, I'd hate to see his talent overlooked. As for Van, Guy, Earle, etc., well, I own and love CDs by all of those guys but had to narrow the list down to 10 with only a couple of honorbale mentions.
That said, keep the feedback coming, I'm sure there are many more songwriters that deserve to be on the list.

Posted by: kurt | Aug 8, 2006 6:50:11 PM

Paul McCartney???? Didn't he die?
Posted by: Erik Ringmar | Aug 9, 2006 10:03:20 AM
No, he got married. same thing. Fortunately, he's remedied the situation by getting divorced.
Posted by: kellie | Aug 9, 2006 11:14:33 AM
If all he wrote was Waterloo Sunset,Ray Davies should be there.

did kellie really ask if Paul was dead? She playin the record backwards?
Posted by: erin | Aug 10, 2006 11:19:21 AM
No, Beauford won't let me touch the turntable. But it is a known fact that marriage can kill you.

wade...who are some of your favorite dead ones?
would kurt cobain have made your previous list if he was still alive and not mainstream?
i've noticed that no one likes to include songwriters on their list who made their fame during the mtv years. why is that? are they less of a songwriter because they have a video on mtv? ignore the videos, i say. listen to the music and lyrics, then compile "the list."
