Dolly + Viking = weird 'Love'
Whitney Houston made Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" one of the biggest singles of all time. Whereas Parton's original is a rather quiet outpouring of emotion, Houston's rendition stands as a no holds barred purge marked by the singer's vocal acrobatics. On Thursday I stumbled across a piano and guitar take on the Parton chestnut that cuts deeper than any song has a right to.
Brendon Massel (pictured) is a Missourian troubadour who has reportedly been on the road for the past decade. Recording under the moniker Viking Moses, he released this version of "I Will Always Love You," which sounds so low fi and emotionally raw it's as if it were recorded right on the break-up bed while she was walking away. Massel now owns the song, in my book.

Linda Ronstadt recorded "I Will Always Love You" long before Dolly did, and in my opinion hers was the best of the three! Dolly has always been too worbly for my taste.

I hate to get all music-geeky on you, Rebecca, but Dolly Parton was the first person to record "I Will Always Love You." In fact, she wrote the song, reportedly after splitting ways with mentor/duet partner/lover? Porter Wagoner.
